It has been a bad week for drummers. The Guardian reports that Martin Bulloch was rushed to a New Your hospital due to complications with his pacemaker after his performance at All Tomorrow’s Parties. Mogwai has canceled the rest of their North American tour.
You probably already know that drummer Travis Barker and DJ AM were involved in a plane crash late in the evening on September 19th after a performance in South Carolina. While the two survived with bad burns, 4 other people, including Barker’s business partner and assistant, Chris Baker were killed. Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw were at first rumored to be on the plane as well, but this turned out to not be true. Our thoughts go out to the victims of the crash and their families.
This guy it pretty funny. If you or your band’s drummer can play better than him, you have a shot a winning the Dixon Outlaw Kit, along with the trip to Hollywood to play for A & R executives and be on the A&R Channel (which is watched by many musicians and labels). Just video yourself or your drummer playing at a Dixon dealer, upload it to YouTube, and add it to our group.
Check out this post in the Rock Band forums about the moral dilemma of a kid who learned to play drums on the game, got a gig playing drums at his church, and now feels compelled to tell the church how he learned. For what it’s worth Bakkster (his username on the forum), it does not matter how you discovered your natural talent for rhythm, but rather that you did discover it and are willing to share it. Big Drum Thump reports that Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight in The US version of NBC’s The Office will be playing a washed-up drummer who joins his nephew’s band, A.D.D.
The movie is full of semi-accurate technology, internet, and musician geek cultural references. Check out this 9 minute promo where Matt (the nephew) sets up Mac laptops with Apple iSight webcams for the band so that they can jam remotely over the internet. Rainn’s character Robert ‘Fish’ Fishman thinks the cameras are only microphones, so he does not bother to wear clothes. Matt’s sister find the live stream over the local network because the virtual jam session is using up most of the home network’s bandwidth, she captures the video in order to humiliate Fish, she uploads it to YouTube, it goes viral, and hilarity ensues. The film also features guitarist/singer/songwriter Teddy Geiger as the band’s guitarist and singer, Josh Gad as the keyboard player, and Emma Stone as the bassist, and Christina Applegate as the love interest. Maybe you should just watch the first couple minutes because these things then to spoil too much of the movie, and it looks pretty good.
The Bass drum head made and photographed for the cover of the Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album has been auctioned at Christie’s of London for just over 1 million US Dollars (or exactly £541,250).

AV Club points out that Fred Armisen plays a character called Jens Hannemann (in a similar spirit to Mike Myers and Dana Carvey’s characters in their Wayne’s World skits) on a instructional/comedic DVD Complicated Drumming Technique.
